Scuba diving information in Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Cancun dive sites form part of the second largest barrier reef in the world. The area is made up of 65 different coral reef species, 350 species of mollusk and over 500 species of fish.

The great thing about Cancun is that there are dive sites to match all levels of expertise. Machones reef area is perfect for a novice diver and is located between the coast of Isla Mujeres and Cancun. Beside Manchones reef there are 10 statues that are part of the Cancun Underwater Museum, created by English artist Jason DeCaires Taylor. A short distance away the Silent Evolution can be found – 450 life-sized statues made from PH neutral clay beginning to be covered with coral and grouped together to form the shape of an eye. These statues are made from real models from all walks of life.

Cancun’s shallow reefs can be found between the coast of Isla Mujeres and Cancun, and include Manchones, Chitales and La Bandera. The deeper dives are slightly further out and include El Tunel, San Toribio, San Miguel, Punta Negra, Punta Sur, La Herradura, Grampin and Octopus.

Cancun offers wreck diving in a C-58 Minesweeper which was deliberately sunk in the 1980s. It broke in half during hurricane Wilma in 2005. The wreck can be penetrated and is categorized as an advanced dive due to the depth and the fact that it’s a drift dive. Besides diving this ghostly wreck it’s possible to see schools of eagle rays.

Night diving is a must if you are coming to the area. Witness the many nocturnal critters that inhabit the area as well as the beautiful and eerie ambiance of diving with a flashlight.
