Scuba Diving and Snorkeling in Utila Island, Bay Islands, Honduras

Scuba diving information in Utila Island, Bay Islands, Honduras

Utila is one of the three Bay Islands of Honduras. The small island is known for its pristine section of the second largest barrier reef in the world, as well as a hub for whale shark migration.

There are over 80 buoyed dive sites around the island, including large walls, drop-offs, sea mounds, coral pinnacles and cavern-like swim-throughs. Utila is also home to several shipwrecks, including a deep sunken cargo ship called the Haliburton. Frequently seen out on Utila’s reefs are Spotted-Eagle Rays, Green Moray Eels, Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Stoplight Parrotfish, Hawksbill Sea Turtles and many others.

Utila is widely known as a very popular and inexpensive place to learn to dive, but also thrives in furthering divers’ education, from a recreational level all the way through to professional degrees. It has been growing in recent years from very much a backpacker pit-stop to a resort diving destination, and the variety of dive sites guarantees something new and exciting in every dive.

Water Temperature

The water temperature ranges from around 26° to 28°C (78 to 82° F) throughout the year.

Diving Suit

During the cooler months, a 3 or 5mm long wetsuit is recommended along with a hood. During the summer months a 3mm short wetsuit is sufficient.

Visibility under water

On average visibility on Utila is exceptional, ranging from 25 to 30 meters (80 to 100 ft). During rainy season it decreases slightly to around 15 to 20 meters (45 to 70 ft). There is even a unique effect of the fresh water discharging from the wells near the reef and creating haloclines.

Climate

Utila enjoys a tropical climate year-round. Temperatures range from 25 to 35°C (77 to 95° F), with the hottest months being July and August. The rainy season is from October to December, but there is little effect on the diving conditions.

How to get there

Utila is accessible from Mainland Honduras via a passenger ferry from the city of La Ceiba. There are also flights from San Pedro Sula to Utila via La Ceiba. There is an additional catamaran service from the neighboring island of Roatan where there is an international airport.

Other Activities

Utila is known for its nightlife and laid-back, social atmosphere. During the day, activities include kayaking and paddle-boarding, yoga, volleyball, and time at the beach or out on the dock.

There are a few sites worth checking out inland, including some freshwater caves and the highest point in Utila, Pumpkin Hill. Utila is also home to the world’s largest sensory deprivation float tank, known as Float Utila. However the most popular non-diving activity would hands down have to be finding a good hammock and enjoying the Caribbean lifestyle.
