Cayo Coco is an island in central Cuba that is part of the Jardines del Rey islands chain. This island supports one of the largest coral reefs in the world, second only to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. The coral reef has a great abundance of fish and gorgonian gardens just waiting to be photographed. The wrecks are a refuge for colorful fish.

Large shoals of tarpon, jacks, spadefish, big snappers, groupers, reef sharks, nurse sharks and barracudas are common sightings in any dive. It is also possible to occasionally see some stingrays, eagle rays, several species of turtles, schools of grunts, schoolmaster and other coral fish species. Some of the best dive sites are the La Jaula reef, Las Coloradas’ small caves, crevices and tunnels, Casasa’s spur-and-groove reefs and Los Tiburones, where you can see reef sharks.

Climate

Tropical climate. The dry season is from December to April and the rainy season from May to November. The average annual temperature is 25 C. The average maximum summer (July to August) temperature is 32 C.

How to get there

A melhor forma de chegar a esta ilha será de avião, onde chegará ao aeroporto internacional de Cayo Coco. A partir daí encontrará vários autocarros e táxis. The best way to reach Cayo Coco is by plane, to the International Airport. From there, you will find several buses and taxis.

Cayo Coco is an important eco-tourism destination, with rich vegetation, lagoons, swamps and desert. This island is a sanctuary for wild animals and birds, with many trails and different hikes to do. One of the most popular tours is in the El Braga National Park.

In Cayo Coco you can participate in the 3-day extravaganza known as the commemoration of the Moncada attacks in July. You could also do several above-water sports like surfing, windsurfing, water-skiing, kayaking, kite-surfing, paragliding, as well tennis, volleyball and water polo.
